November meeting
The Christmas meeting was memorable. Firstly it was good to see Spam at the meeting although he is very ill he had made a tremendous effort to be at the meeting. He is very brave and an inspiration to all of us.

The meeting was well attended and the Christmas buffet was more than enough for all, the table was overflowing with good things to enjoy. Our thanks go to Caroline and John for this superb effort.

Stuart Bowell our guest speaker for the evening spoke about the Round Tower Churches of Norfolk and Suffolk. His research showed the development of these towers and the supporting churches, the use of local materials, flint in particular, demonstrating the design of building flint in the round. It is not possible to form a corner in flint without the use of a Quorn stone to support the structure. Later Stuart illustrated his talk with many superb slides of several interesting churches and it was evident in many cases that most churches had originally thatched nave roofs.

Our thanks to Stuart for a memorable evening.

The next meeting is on the Tuesday 31st January and our Guest speaker is John Newman who is going to talk about new discoveries at Sutton Hoo. This is not one to miss!

Find of the year awards

These are given out every year for the highest voted items at the monthly find of the month competition. The most sought after award is “The Albert Memorial Shield in memory of “Albert Grimwood”.

October meeting

The October meeting was most informative with our own Darren Clarke talking about the Making of the English people.

He focused on the English settlement from the fifth century, detailing the changes in language, religion and culture, especially in our East Anglian region.

Next meeting 29/11/2011

The next meeting is the Christmas meeting. The club as usual lays on a banquet of food for all our club members, so not one to miss.

We also have a guest speaker Stuart Bowell from Stowmarket who is the Chairman of The Round Tower Churches Society. His talk is entitled “Round Tower Churches”

The second part of the talk saw Tim Hawke of the “Steadfast Trust” talking about the foundation of the English charity, its goals and local projects.

September meeting

For the September meeting we had our famous auction. This consisted of no fewer than 150 lots, nearly all the items sold. Most notable was a beautiful pool cue with mother of pearl inlays that made £20.00 and a brand new next watch with marquisates making £12.00. Coin lots in bags were also very popular. Many thank to Kelvin, Bob and Paul who helped to make the evening both entertaining and profitable. Very nearly £30.00 was made for club funds. Many thanks to everyone who participated in the fray.

Next meeting is on Tuesday 25th October 2011

August Meeting

The August meeting was well attended and members took part in an expertly set and keenly contested quiz.

Our quiz-master for the night was Kelvin Gage who tested our knowledge of coins, artefacts and detectors.

The 1st prize of a bottle of champagne went to Chris Behn with a score of 17 out of 20 and the 2nd prize of a bottle of wine went to our chairman David Cummings with a score of 16 ½ out of 20
